The Odhecaton ensemble, since its debut in 1998, has received some of the most prestigious record awards and the recognition, by critics, of having inaugurated a new interpretative attitude in the field of polyphonic performance, with the declamation of the word as the base for its mobile and expressive reading of polyphony. The vocal ensemble derives its name from Harmonice Musices Odhecaton, the first printed book of polyphonic music, published in Venice by Ottaviano Petrucci in 1501. Its repertoire is represented by the European musical production between the Fourteenth and Seventeenth centuries. Odhecaton brings together some of the most selected Italian male voices specialized in the execution of Renaissance and pre-classical music under the conduction of Paolo Da Col. The ensemble recorded fourteen CDs, dedicated respectively to music by Gombert, Isaac, Josquin, Peñalosa, to the masters of Picardy, to the Spanish and Portuguese composers active in the seventeenth century in the Canary Islands, to Palestrina, Monteverdi, Carlo Gesualdo, Orlando di Lasso and Alessandro Scarlatti and Loyset Compère. With these programmes, Odhecaton is a guest in the major festivals in Europe and America and has obtained the major record awards. In recent years Odhecaton has devoted a large part of its interpretative commitment to the sacred music of Claudio Monteverdi and to the contemporary repertoire, as evidenced by the alternation in this programme between ancient and contemporary (De Stefani, Pärt, Rihm, Sciarrino and Tavener). In 2018 Odhecaton was awarded the Abbiati Prize by the Italian music critics for its performances, which the jury indicated as “a paradigm of style, clear exposition and ennobling of the sound spaces in which they resonate”.
