The Guadagnini Quartet, founded in 2012, takes its name from a great Italian luthier. A choice that implies a strong national belonging of its four members, who play instruments of modern violin making: Fabrizio Zoffoli plays a “Marino Capicchioni” built in Rimini in 1962, Cristina Papini a “Massimo Nesi” built in Florence in 2006, Matteo Rocchi and Alessandra Cefaliello respectively play a viola of 2012 and a cello of 2016 by the luthier from Brescia Filippo Fasser. The programme also has an “Italian” common thread, having chosen to deal with the imaginative inventiveness of a composer of the twentieth century, the Third Quartet “Cantari alla madrigalesca” (1931) by Gianfrancesco Malipero (1882-1973) and with a very recent work by Silvia Colsanti, a quartet (2018) that takes the title from a poem by Valentine Zechen “ Ogni cosa ad ogni cosa ha detto addio”(Everything has said goodbye to everything), linked to the theme of detachment. A work first performed by the Cremona Quartet, with which the Guadagnini Quartet perfected itself at the Accademia Stauffer in Cremona. The context of the programme is represented by two quartets by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: the Quartet in G major K. 80 (1770), written in Italy, in Lodi, by a fourteen-year-old Mozart and the Quartet in C major, called “Dissonance” K 465 (1785), the last of the six that the 29-year-old Mozart dedicated to FJ Haydn. Mature experimentation and youthful genius: “we want to make it clear to those who listen to us that that music is great music, even if written by a fourteen-year-old boy”.
Born in 2012, after just two years, the Quartetto Guadagnini is already winner of the Piero Farulli prize, within the XXXIII edition of the prestigious Italian musical critics poll “Franco Abbiati”. The ensemble stands out among all the best chamber music groups in Europe dedicated to classical and romantic repertoire, for their peculiar feeling for XX and XXI centuries music.
The quartet has already played in the most important Italian concert halls, including the Società del Quartetto of Milan, the Accademia Filarmonica in Rome, the Festival Stradivari in Cremona (on the occasion of the opening of the Violin Museum’s Arvedi Auditorium), the Unione Musicale of Turin, the Società Umanitaria in Milan, the Bologna Festival, the Amici della Musica of Padova, Teatro Alighieri in Ravenna for the Association A. Mariani, Teatro Ponchielli of Cremona, Teatro La Pergola in Firenze, Teatro Savoia in Campobasso, Camerata Musicale in Bari and in important concert halls in France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and China.
In 2016, they returned to the Italian culture Institute of Paris (December), after playing there with Beatrice Rana in 2015, for a one-month residency followed by three concerts in Paris and in Strasburg.
In July 2016 they debut at the Festival dei 2Mondi in Spoleto, on stage with Premio Volpi actress Alba Rohrwacher in Tre risvegli, a drama in music by Silvia Colasanti on text by Patrizia Cavalli, directed by Mario Martone. An instrumental suite extracted from the work will be created by the composer and will be dedicated to the quartet. In the same year he was chosen, from the foundation Stauffer of Cremona, to represent the Italian excellence in China at the Shanghai Exibition Center, in which he then held the Materclass and performed in several concerts.
The quartet also collaborates with other composers such as Silvia Colasanti, Domenico Turi, Paolo Cavallone, of whom they performed and recorded the work Mercutio (2009) and with Raffaele Bellafronte, of whom they recorded for Tactus… For Five, in quintet with guitarist David di Ienno.
Despite its recent formation, the Quartet Guadagnini also received the first prices at the International chamber music competition “Massimiliano Antonelli” in Latina, at the V Musical Competition Marco Dall’Aquila and the XVI International Competition Pietro Argento in Gioia del Colle (BA), and has already appeared on the most important broadcasting channels, including Sandro Cappelletto’s show on RAI 5, dedicated to Mozart’s quartet K465, with excellent audience results.
About its training the quartet completed a cycle of specialization with the Quartetto di Cremona at the “W. Stauffer “in Cremona, he studied with Hatto Beyerle, historical violist of the Alban Berg Quartet and was invited to take part in some sessions of the ECMA (European Chamber Music Academy, of which Beyerle himself is founder and artistic director).
He followed some lessons with Patrick Juedt and recently attended the specialization courses for string quartet held by Günter Pichler at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena and in the ProQuartet in Paris.
The quartet was selected for the project Le dimore del Quartetto in collaboration with ADSI (Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane).
In 2017 their first CD is released by Amadeus Magazine, the most important classical magazine in Italy; in 2018 will debut in seasons such as: IUC di Roma, MITO, Lucca Classical Music Festival and will hold several masterclasses in Italy and in Bangkok at Chulalongkorn University.
The Quartetto Guadagnini plays four modern instruments: Fabrizio a Marino Capicchioni built in Rimini in 1962, Cristina a Massimo Nesi built in Florence in 2006, Matteo and Alessandra play two instruments of the Brescian luthier Filippo Fasser, the viola is from 2012 and the cello of 2016.
